There are two ferry companies that offer year-round service to Nantucket, both departing from Hyannis Harbor, with schedules that change with the seasons (running more frequently during the busier summer months). There is also a seasonal ferry that runs from Harwich Port directly to Nantucket. Seasonal travel between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket is available during the summer months.
The traditional ferry transports both vehicles and passengers from Hyannis and takes just over 2 hours. Whether you are staying fo r a week or a month, you may want to bring your own vehicle. However, transporting your vehicle round-trip can cost upwards of $500, so renting a car may be more economical. Nevertheless, if you are planning to bring your car on island, it is wise to make a reservation well in advance. Six months before travel is not too early. The fast ferry (passenger-only) service takes one hour.
Hy-Line Cruises also offers traditional and fast ferry service between Hyannis and Nantucket, but both boats are passenger-only vessels. Local wisdom: The new cafe at the Hyannis terminal is a wonderful place to grab breakfast, lunch, or a snack during your travels.
This high-speed passenger-only vessel, operating out of Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich Port, has a crossing time of 80 minutes. This is a local secret that is still kept as such. Local wisdom: Avoid Hyannis traffic and park for free if you are just heading over for the day.
